We know about the atomic structure of an active semiconductor diode.. But,,, how will be the atomic structure of a faulty diode..? ( I mean, when a diode gets short circuited or open circuited) (13 years ago)

hmm...as i am getting ur question,, u meant structure when both of the pins of the diode connected each other. Well, i dnt knw. But i am giving my estimation. I think p type will go neutral as electron will flow frm n type. However electron density will decrease in n type but hole density(that will b neutral by electron aftr joining the two pins) will remain the same in ptype, as hole cant pass through conductor . Similarly with the open circuit (either ptyp or n typ will b neutral acc. To the connection with the btry). I am sorry if my answer is wrong. if my estimation is wrong. Plz explain. First of all, I clear my Q. In a diode, there are two type of semiconductors will be sandwiched.. ( P&N type). Where P-type semiconductor has a kind of Atomic structure similarly N-type semiconductor has also a kind of Atomic structure (Penta, tri valent etc).. This is when the diode is in normal working condition.. Okay..? My Q is, if the same diode is get flash over due to excessive voltage, the diode won't function.. Okay..? In this condition, how will be the atomic structure of of the P&N portions of the diode? Even though the diode won't function, it will be in Solid state.. Every solid state matrieal has a own atomic structure.. So, now my Q is, the atomic structure of the faulty diode's P&N type portion will be differ from its original structure or not...?  (13 years ago)
